Mohammadpur Case: Hearing on Charge Framing Adjourned to April 15
In the crimes against humanity case filed over the killing of nine individuals during the July uprising in the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 has adjourned the hearing on framing charges.
The tribunal, chaired by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumdar with Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud, as the other member, set April 15, 2026, as the new hearing date. The hearing scheduled for April 8, 2026, did not proceed because the defense had not received all necessary documents from the prosecution. Defense lawyer Sifat Mahmud (also referred to as Sifat Mahmud Shubho) informed the court of this issue. Prosecutor Barrister Shyikh Mahdi appeared for the state.
State-appointed lawyer Abul Hasan commented to journalists that the defense had only received the formal charge sheet and had requested the remaining documents from the prosecution, hoping to receive them before the next date.
The case involves 28 accused, including former Textile and Jute Minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak, former Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former Additional DIG Proloy Kumar Joardar, former Joint Police Commissioner Biplab Kumar Sarkar, along with local leaders of the now-banned Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League. Four accused are currently in custody: Naimul Hasan Rasel (President of the Mohammadpur Thana unit of the banned Chhatra League), Sazzad Hossain, Omar Faruk, and Fazle Rabbi (Vice-Presidents of the same unit).
The tribunal had previously taken cognizance of the prosecution’s formal charges on January 18, 2026, and issued arrest warrants against the absconding accused.
