Hearing on charge-framing on the Jahajbari Case set for June 7
The International Crimes Tribunal has set June 7 as the date for the hearing on framing charges against eight accused, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in a case over the killing of nine young men in a staged “militant drama” at the Jahaj Bari house in the capital’s Kallyanpur area.
The date was fixed on Wednesday by Tribunal-1.
The three-member judicial panel of Tribunal-1, led by its Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder, set the date. The other members of the panel are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
Prosecutor Shyikh Mahdi argued on behalf of the prosecution before the tribunal today. He submitted a petition seeking one more month’s time for the hearing on framing charges. Subsequently, the tribunal set June 7 as the new date.
Earlier, the hearing was scheduled for April 6. However, the court postponed it following a petition. On March 8, prosecutor Gazi M.H. Tamim had applied for the appointment of state defense counsel for the six fugitive accused in this case.
Currently, two people have been arrested and are in jail in this case. They are former Inspector General of Police (IGP) A.K.M. Shahidul Hoque and former Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md. Asaduzzaman Mia.
Besides Sheikh Hasina, the other fugitive accused are former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, then DMP Additional Commissioner Sheikh Muhammad Maruf Hasan, then Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit chief Monirul Islam, then DMP Joint Commissioner (Crime) Krishna Pada Roy, and then Joint Commissioner (Detective Branch) Abdul Baten. On February 22, the court had ordered notices to be published in two national dailies, instructing them to appear.
The tribunal had taken cognizance of the formal charges submitted by the prosecution on January 29 of this year.
According to the prosecution, on the night of July 25, 2016, the police’s Counter Terrorism Unit conducted a raid on a house known as Jahaj Bari in Kallyanpur, which was presented as a militant den. In that raid, codenamed ‘Operation Storm-26’, nine young men were shot dead.
