About Me

Shyikh Mahdi

Thank you for taking an interest in my professional journey!

I am a Bangladeshi lawyer (Barrister and Advocate) currently serving as a Prosecutor (Assistant Attorney General) at the International Crimes Tribunal, Bangladesh (“ICT-BD”). My primary areas of practice encompass International Crimes, Human Rights, and Humanitarian Law.

I joined the legal profession in 2015, where I ventured into civil, commercial, and corporate law, providing both advisory and dispute resolution services. I have had the privilege of working with some of Dhaka’s most prominent law firms, including Vertex Chambers and The Law Counsel, advising multinational corporations, private enterprises, start-ups, and non-profit organizations across diverse sectors such as banking, FMCG, pharmaceuticals, and energy. My litigation and arbitration experience spans civil and criminal matters before various courts and tribunals, where I have consistently delivered strategic and effective legal solutions.

My professional engagements have also included advising and collaborating with international law firms in the United Kingdom, the United States, China, and the Netherlands on matters concerning Bangladeshi citizens and entities. From 2018 to 2019, I further broadened my multi-jurisdictional expertise through my work at a Solicitors’ firm in London. Additionally, I have served as an Expert Witness (Country Expert) before the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration & Asylum Chamber) and the Upper Tribunal of the United Kingdom in multiple asylum cases involving Bangladeshi nationals.

As part of constitutional activism, I joined the writ petition of Dr. Badiul Alam Mazumdar & Others vs. Bangladesh (Writ Petition No. 9935 of 2024) as one of the intervenors representing the citizens of Bangladesh; in this case, the Hon’ble Court declared parts of the 15th Amendment of the Constitution illegal by a historic judgment, thereby restoring the non-party Caretaker government. I was also a petitioner in the “Article 116 Case”, being Saddam Hossen & Others vs. Bangladesh, (Writ Petition No. 10356 of 2024), which declared the amendment in Article 116 of the Constitution illegal, thereby returning the control and administration of the subordinate judiciary to the Supreme Court for full and effective separation of the Judiciary.

In June and July 2024, during the student-led movement in Bangladesh, I joined an initiative that provided legal support to thousands of protesting students and members of the public. Following this, I assumed my current role as a prosecutor at ICT-BD, reconstituted to prosecute crimes against humanity committed in July and August 2024.
