Deadline extended for Investigation Report against Rear Admiral Sohail

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has granted the Prosecution an additional three months to submit its investigation report in a case alleging the enforced disappearance of a former leader of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir during the Awami League administration. The Tribunal fixed 7 September 2026 as the deadline for filing the report.

The order was passed on 10 June by a two-member bench of ICT-1 headed by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder. Prosecutor Barrister Shyikh Mahdi informed the Tribunal of the progress of the investigation and sought additional time to complete the inquiry, which the Tribunal allowed.

Former Chattogram Port Chairman Rear Admiral (Retd.) Mohammad Sohail is the sole accused in the case. At the time of the alleged incident, he was serving as Director of the Legal and Media Wing of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

According to the Prosecution, RAB personnel allegedly abducted Golam Murtaza, then a leader of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, from Rabindra Sarobar in Dhaka in 2012. The Prosecution claims that he was subsequently detained in a secret detention facility, commonly referred to as an “Aynaghar” (mirror house), for 47 days and was subjected to enforced disappearance on Sohail’s instructions.

Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on 5 August 2024, Sohail was sent into compulsory retirement from the Bangladesh Navy. He is currently in custody.
