The United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, Mr. Morris Tidball-Binz paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) at the Tribunal Office in Dhaka this morning. The UN Special Rapporteur was accompanied by Mr. Anis Mahfoudh, Human Rights Officer of the UN Office of the Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh.
During the meeting, the UN Rapporteur held constructive discussions with the Chief Prosecutor, reflecting their positive interest in the work of the ICT, especially with regards to the application of forensic analysis. They offered several important suggestions to maintain and further strengthen international standards within the Tribunal’s judicial processes.
The Chief Prosecutor briefed the Special Rapporteur on the legal significance of the Tribunal’s mandate in delivering justice for the atrocities committed during July-August 2024 and beyond. Both sides exchanged views on the challenges of prosecuting international crimes, safeguarding victims’ rights, and fostering global cooperation in the fight against impunity.
