Barrister Arman Denies Suggestion that He Was in Hiding: Cross-Examination Continues at the ICT in Enforced Disappearance (TFI) Case
Barrister Mir Ahmed Bin Kasem Arman rejected claims that he had remained in hiding for eight years, telling the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-1) that the allegation was “not true” during cross-examination in a case related to alleged enforced disappearance and torture at the TFI Cell.
During questioning, defence lawyer Aminul Gani Tito argued that Arman had been in hiding rather than forcibly disappeared by any law-enforcement agency. Arman denied the allegation and also rejected suggestions that the accounts described in his book about the period were fabricated.
When asked about physical evidence, Arman said the investigation officer had requested the gamcha (towel), lungi and T-shirt he wore at the time, but he could not provide them because they had not been preserved. He also denied intentionally destroying those items. A documentary on Arman’s alleged disappearance was shown in court, where he appeared wearing a lungi, T-shirt and gamcha. Defence lawyer Tito claimed the attire was staged for the documentary, but Arman said the footage was taken from original CCTV recordings.
The tribunal, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mozumder, fixed 10 March for the continuation of the cross-examination. During the hearing, defence lawyers Aminul Gani Tito and Tabarak Hossain participated in the proceedings, while the prosecution was represented by Chief Prosecutor Md. Aminul Islam, along with prosecutors, Md. Mizanul Islam, Gazi MH Tamim, BM Sultan Mahmud, and Shyikh Mahdi.
