Change in Leadership at Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal

On 23 February 2026, the Government of Bangladesh officially appointed Md Aminul Islam as the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), succeeding Mohammad Tajul Islam. The change was formalised through a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, signed by the solicitor of the ministry.

Md Aminul Islam, a lawyer practising at the Bangladesh Supreme Court, has taken charge of leading the prosecution at the ICT. The notification grants him the status, rank, and privileges equivalent to the Attorney General of Bangladesh, in line with practice for the office of the Chief Prosecutor.

Mr. Tajul Islam had been appointed to the position on 7 September 2024 by the then-interim government. Prior to that appointment, he was a Supreme Court lawyer who had work experience as defence counsel in cases before the tribunal. Following the official announcement of his removal, Mr. Tajul Islam extended best wishes to his successor and expressed a desire for ongoing cases to proceed smoothly under new leadership.

Upon assuming office, Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam made public statements emphasising the importance of moving cases forward with sincerity, adherence to law, and due process, noting the tribunal’s role in pursuing justice for victims of serious crimes.

The change in leadership comes at a time when the ICT continues to handle cases of international and domestic significance. Prosecution teams under the new leadership have indicated their focus on progressing ongoing matters in accordance with legal standards and procedural requirements.
