Formal Charges Filed Against Sheikh Hasina for atrocities during July Uprising

The Office of the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Bangladesh, has formally submitted charges against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in connection with crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the student-led uprising in July–August 2024.

Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam filed the charges before the Tribunal on Sunday, detailing grave allegations that include murder, enforced disappearances, and the incineration of bodies during a nationwide movement aimed at overthrowing the government.

According to the prosecution, the former head of government played a central role in orchestrating and directing the crimes. The charge documents assert that these acts were perpetrated in a widespread and systematic manner, pursuant to directives issued by Sheikh Hasina, who is described as the principal architect and instigator of the atrocities committed during the uprising.

The proceedings are being conducted in absentia, as the accused reportedly fled the country in late 2024. The Tribunal has taken all necessary steps to ensure transparency, with state broadcaster Bangladesh Television (BTV) scheduled to air the trial proceedings live for public awareness.

This marks a significant development in the ICT’s continuing mandate to ensure accountability for international crimes and uphold the principles of justice under Bangladeshi and international law.
